NYC-based <a href="http://josephcarinicarpets.com/" >Joseph Carini Carpets</a> announced their latest Artist Collaboration and it&#8217;s a really good one! They enlisted renowned Italian designer and co-founder of the Memphis group <a href="http://www.ateliermendini.it/index.php?page=69" >Alessandro Mendini</a>, well known for his work with Alessi and Swatch, to create a limited-edition series and the result is The Earthquake Collection. Using bold graphic forms and gutsy color ways, the designs bring Mendini&#8217;s legendary design aesthetic to the often forgotten floor in this latest collection of rugs.
Joseph-Carini-Carpet-MENDINI-rug-1a The carpets were woven by select weavers in Nepal who were trained by master weavers with the hope of bringing back and preserving the lost weaving techniques of the area. The designs were in the process of being woven in 2015 when the earthquake hit. While none of the carpets were damaged, the four carpets were named after villages in Nepal affected by the earthquake. Joseph-Carini-Carpet-MENDINI-rug-1b Joseph Carini Carpets will be making 10 sets of each design

We recently returned from Antigua, Guatemala where we checked out a first time exhibition called <a href="http://www.simbiotica.gt/" >Simbiótica</a>. Simbiótica was brought about to bring a connection between contemporary artists and traditional Guatemalan artisans as a way to expand job opportunities and to show a new approach to the country&#8217;s artistic endeavors. The eight artists worked with rural-based, master Guatemalan artisans on a collection that steered them towards more modern designs and the results were pretty incredible. Take a look.

Designed by Sofía Contreras-Paredes
Handmade by Women’s Association – LAS ROSAS – from Concepción Chiquirichapa, Quetzaltenango Fashion designer Contreras-Paredes was taken outside her comfort zone when participating in this challenge. Designed by Luis Arrivillaga and Giulia Basile of Arrivillaga Basile
Handmade by Association of Weaving Women for Integral Development in Chiquirichapa – AMTEDICH and Youth Network of Momostenango – RED JUVEM Both Arrivillaga and Basile were inspired by the techniques and materials and chose to create pieces that pushed the boundaries and possibilities of what the artisans can usually achieve. The wall textiles incorporate multiple types of stitches in singular pieces, which is normally not done. The artisans were also able to adapt their skills to develop the modern woven components on the Sarga chairs. Designed by Bárbara Castañeda and Jimena Pons of Workaholic
Handmade by Women’s Association – LAS ROSAS – from Concepción Chiquirichapa, Quetzaltenango and Youth Network of Momostenango – RED JUVEM After observing the artisan’s techniques using beads and wool, they decided to reinterpret six handmade aluminum structures to become magazine holders when woolen linens were added, and coffee tables when resin was used. In addition to those, they created three beaded linens that share the story between the artists themselves and the artisans. Handmade by Health and Integral Development for Momostenango – ASDIM and Youth Network of Momostenango – RED JUVEM Boror designed a reptile-like chaise lounge with a metallic base and woven plastic threads that most would consider dangerous, but in Mayan cultures, it’s a fertility symbol. On display was an unforgettable modular rug that we wanted to take home with us, not only for its colors and patterns, but for its possibilities. Released in two editions for international carpet manufacturer, <a href="https://houseoftaiping.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Tai Ping</a>, Reform throws the idea of rectangular carpets out the window. Their rugs are designed to work in any space by reconfiguring its three modules to best fit your room.
Reform consists of three geometric modules that you can piece together into the perfect rug no matter the shape of your space. Besides its unique shapes, Reform looked at overlapping circles on the color wheel to decide on unique color palettes for each edition. Each rug is handcrafted by Tai Ping in their Xiamen artisan workshop Reform II
towards color blocking with bright, vivid hues made of 100% wool. Reform I utilizes pastel colors to reference stone against metals, like brass and silver. This edition also uses a combination of materials, including different yarn count and pile height wool, dull silk, spun silk, flax, and shiny fine lurex for its variety of textures.

We’ve long been fans of the installation work of Mexican artist Gabriel Dawe, who is known for his site-specific installations that explore the connection between fashion and architecture. This year he’s collaborated with leading commercial flooring surfaces manufacturer <a href="https://www.manningtoncommercial.com/" rel="nofollow noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">Mannington Commercial</a> to release a collection that we think is a match made in heaven. Sought out for his innovative installation work, Dawe brings a fresh energy and perspective to Mannington’s products that are designed to inspire creativity and deliver advanced performance in all types of commercial spaces.
“When people encounter my installations something happens that instead of thinking of what they’re doing, they go to that place almost like going back to being a child and seeing something for the first time,” said Dawe. “It was
important to have something that was a statement in terms of color.” With artistic inspiration from artists ranging from Frida Kahlo to James Turrell, Dawe went on to study graphic design at the Universidad de las Américas, in Puebla, Mexico, because he liked the idea of applying creativity to things that had a pragmatic function. “Because any design project has to perform within certain parameters and it has to achieve specific goals, it offered a way of channeling my creativity.” Though design gave Dawe a great foundation, it’s restrictions later became cumbersome and left him wanting more creative freedom. “That’s when I decided to quit design and become an artist,” Dawe says. Soon after Dawe was given the opportunity to have a solo show at a yoga studio/gallery titled The Light Within the Shadow, which seems rather prophetic when viewing his current installations. This collection is the direct result of the collaboration that first began in early 2017, with Dawe sitting high atop Mannington’s dream list of artists they’d love to work with. After being approached by the team to work together, Dawe says he jumped at the opportunity. He and the team met together several times to discuss the design process as well as Dawe’s approach to creating before deciding upon a plan. The Moiré Collection represents Gabriel Dawe’s first foray into product design, inspired by his work where lengths of colorful thread are configured into forms culminating in planes of depth-filled light. In textile and print design, moiré is defined as a wavy or rippling textural effect where sets of lines or dots are superimposed upon one another, creating sets of patterns differing in size and spacing – and the Moiré Collection is a stunning visual effect of its namesake. Dawe’s main inspiration came from the way in which the moiré effect plays with your depth perception, an aspect that’s present in his installations and oftentimes difficult to capture on camera. His installations are made of a succession of criss-crossing lines that shift in space, creating an immersive experience as you walk around them. Dawe took this idea and translated it into a 2D image using a combination of layers of lines and his signature spectrum colors.
To me, color equals joy.
“When you look at his work and his pieces, there’s almost this childlike wonder. His work is beautiful and his artwork has inspired us to kind of think beyond what we do on our normal scope. The first time we met Gabriel we talked about how light is a major influencer in how his artwork is viewed, and so we tried to translate that effect of light through the yarns that we use,” said Roby Isaac, VP of Design for Mannington Commercial. “We’re at a fortunate time when people are really embracing pattern.” The collection’s designs feature replicated lines and forms that change in gradation and depth when viewed from different perspectives. The colorways are focused on the red-orange, blue-green, and purple-indigo families, as well as a light grey, medium grey, and full-color spectrum which speaks to the unique quality of light in Gabriel Dawe’s work – explore one family’s or create an entire spectrum of color. According to Dawe, “To me, color equals joy. I recently unpacked some old work and it’s interesting seeing after so many years how color has been such an important aspect of my work.” You can choose from one style of broadloom and three styles of modular carpeting in The Moiré Collection. Pure Wavelength features a large-scale pattern in modular carpeting, resulting in lots of dimension with taut, criss-crossed lines. Visible Light is a smaller-scale design available in both broadloom and modular styles that highlights texture among the color gradient. And Ray Tracing deconstructs a color gradient into bands of striated color to create an open, playful pattern. The level of moiré present in each design varies, while Dawe’s signature light is captured by a special high-luster yarn that brings the colors to life in each one. Dawe says he envisions the line being used everywhere. “Even though this is a commercial product intended for high traffic environments, I can see it used even at homes. I’m even thinking of getting a broadloom section and make it into a rug for my living room.” “It’s been a fantastic experience, and I didn’t expect it to be so authentic in a way. It’s like sort of peeking into one of my installations. To see it translated like that into a flooring product, it’s really exciting,” Dawe said. He also had the chance to see the machinery and the industrial process, giving a bit of insight into how the process affects the final product as well as understanding what was achievable and what was not. Dawe went on to add that, “Working on this project definitely gave me ideas for future artwork and it was curious to see how my input offered a new perspective to Mannington’s team and made them see things in ways that they hadn’t thought of before. I hope that this product offers something that is new and fresh and excites people to integrate it into their spaces. I also hope that it brings joy to people who get to walk on it.” The Moiré Collection beautifully brings together Mannington’s years of experience in the commercial carpeting world with Gabriel Dawe’s unique form of art. We love the result of this collaborative effort! Learn more about this collection at manningtoncommercial.com.

<a href="http://www.neocon.com/" rel="noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">NeoCon</a> has once again come and gone and this year’s show marked the 50th year of bringing the latest and greatest in the commercial design world to Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. The show presented a host of innovative textiles and workspace offerings that can and will change the landscape of offices and other commercial settings for years to come. Brands are spending more time focusing on noise reduction, privacy, and comfort, with aesthetics and ergonomics playing a key role. Check out below to see some of our favorite finds at this year’s NeoCon.
KnollTextiles also launched a new collection of wallcoverings by Trove. The Atmosphere Collection comes in several variations, each with a watercolor-like feel, including Cascade (below). Ghislaine Viñas launched her first-ever textile collection – the Curious Crowd collection with HBF Textiles where she was inspired by sea slugs and jellyfish. The colors, patterns, and shapes are reflected in the
of six designs, which include Ms. Quilty, Captain Bubble, Sir Stripe-A-Lot, Sister Solid, Madam Dottie, and Mr. Dimple.

Shaw Contract partnered with Form Us With Love on Inside Shapes, a collection of carpet tiles that go in a whole new direction. The collection comprises four tile shapes that come in 12 colors, which means the possibilities are endless. If coming up with your own pattern is too much, you can always go with one of the 17 premixed options available. Another release from Shaw Contract is their PET Resilient product line of sustainable flooring that’s made from 40% post-consumer PET plastic, which means there are 16 recycled plastic bottles per square foot. Palette is the first collection and it features digitally printed surfaces, including the terrazzo-inspired one above. The Scandinavian Spaces showroom was designed by Ghislaine Viñas and it was a visual delight, especially this custom wallpaper she created for the back of the space.

Five Cities by Ellie Malin for Designtex 5×5

The Designtex 5×5 collection was made in partnership with Crypton and it featured five contemporary artists who were asked to design a pattern to be digitally printed on Crypton fabric. Each of the five patterns comes in five colorways.

CrissCross by Kapitza for Designtex 5×5

BitDrift by Phillip David Stearns for Designtex 5×5

Social Dance by Elizabeth Atterbury for Designtex 5×5

Line Variations by Arturo Guerrero for Designtex 5×5

Herman Miller is set to launch the Cosm task chair this summer. It was designed by Studio 7.5 and it’s just as comfortable as it is visually appealing. We especially liked this coral-ish/red color. We also loved this vignette in the Herman Miller showroom which featured some of their iconic pieces wrapped with their new Overlay sub-architectural walls by Birsel + Seck. BuzziSpace launched Cory Grosser’s BuzziMood – living moss wall panels that help absorb sound while bringing greenery inside. Cross Cut is a rug from Maharam that was designed by Hella Jongerius who brings a new approach to rugs with geometric cutouts. Equilux is a new textile series from LUUM which features layered grid patterns that were inspired by light that passes through geometric facades. Arc-Com presented a lot of new textiles with geometric patterns in striking color palettes and we couldn’t choose just one favorite. Benjamin Hubert designed this privacy chair for De Vorm with a compression molded shell made from PET Felt, a felt made from recycled plastic bottles. DARRAN unveiled ThinkingQuietly, a 4-person workstation made from an acoustic material comprised of recycled plastic bottles. Teknion will be launching the tn Storage Collection in the Fall and it consists of a series of desktop and wall-mounted storage organizers in fun colors. Danish firm Norm Architects designed a series of furniture for OFS Brands that includes sleek seating with curvaceous silhouettes. In addition to new commitments to sustainable practices, Interface launched a collection called Visual Code, which includes this high-pile tufted design called “Overedge” that gives the look of a homey throw rug but with easier installation, and the durability and safety of a carpet tile.

Carpet tiles have been around for years, generally just utilitarian squares patched together to cover a bare floor in need of some coverage. Enter Swedish studio Form Us With Love who recently partnered with commercial flooring brand <a href="https://www.shawcontract.com/en-us" rel="noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">Shaw Contract</a> on a new modular carpet concept called <a href="http://www.insideshapes.com/" rel="noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">Inside Shapes</a>. The innovative collection marks the first collaboration between the two brands and it marks a new way to think about carpet tiles.
Inside Shapes takes a different approach with the standard 24″ x 24″ carpet tile that goes way beyond just pattern and color. It begins with four geometric shapes – square, diagonal, point, and curve – and 12 color choices that come in light and dark shades. Between the shapes, colors, and shades, the resulting configurations are unlimited with only the imagination holding one back. If the open parameters are too much, they created 17 pre-mixed options that are quite compelling. Either
the finished product will turn any floor into a dynamic piece of art. If you’re feeling lost with all the possibilities, Shaw Contract has created a digital tool that gives designers the ability to see all of the possible configurations. A blank canvas starts the process where users can arrange and rearrange the tiles how they want, along with changing the colors. While Inside Shapes was designed with commercial interiors in mind, the collection would work really well in residential settings allowing individuals to create their own custom wall-to-wall carpet or an area rug.
